Harlan Wallner, Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern

Harlan Wallner is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern at Maitri Counseling Center in Gulf Breeze, Florida, where he specializes in helping people recover from traumatic experiences, facilitating post-traumatic growth, and developing resilience. He specializes in working with combat veterans, men, and people struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, eco-despair, and existential angst.

His approach is three-fold and involves:

  • Present-focus: Sharing here-and-now skills, techniques, and resources to help respond more skillfully to the challenges, stresses, triggers, and difficult emotions that arise as you move through the day;
  • Past-focus: Creating conditions where you feel safe to do the work of resolving the unresolved pieces of your life story that, when triggered, tend to lead to present moment distress, emotional turbulence, and choices and behaviors that you later come to regret; and
  • Future-focus: Providing support to explore possibilities for a future that aligns with your soul’s deepest yearnings.

Practicing from a holistic perspective, Harlan employs EMDR, Expressive Art Therapy, and elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Neurobiology, the Soldier’s Heart method, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in his work with clients. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Central Florida and his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Goddard College. Harlan is a veteran of the war in Iraq, an artist, a writer, a therapist, a father, an ex-husband, and a long-time vipassana meditator. He has fallen or been knocked down by life many times, but has gotten up or been helped up more times. In that process he has learned much about healing, helping, and the therapeutic relationship and he brings that knowledge, understanding, and compassion into his practice of meeting each client where they are. Knowing that he isn’t the ideal therapist for everyone, he invites you to reach out for a no-cost initial consultation to explore your needs and determine whether or not the two of you are an optimal fit.
